Fall is a busy season at the Center. New classes are starting, we are revising the materials for the Gokhale Method 101 class, and the book launch is approaching. If the season is busy for you too, be sure to take some moments to relax – and remember that improving your posture can help you do this.

Posture is about more than just bones and muscles. I see posture as an important pillar of health. Not only does posture support the organs and every movement the body makes, but every change in posture affects circulation, breathing, nerve function, and other systems that can help us de-stress.

Posture may even have a direct effect on our moods. In fact, researchers have determined that patients who  “stand upright, head erect, smile, and breathe deeply,” find it nearly impossible to “feel depressed.” One study of manic depressive patients even found that this routine eliminated the need for medi-cation. Of course, posture can’t make our problems go away, but it can help us cope with them.

In this issue of Positive Stance you’ll find useful techniques to help you relax. You’ll learn how to read in bed without pain, review the benefits of lying down, and find an invitation to try a special Yoga class for free.

Here's to a relaxing and fun Fall.

Photo of the Month

Photo of the monthI encountered this Burkina man taking a nap on a log. Notice his anteverted pelvis, relaxed shoulders, and lengthened spine. Anytime you lie down, this same lengthening can occur in your back if you take a moment to perform stretchlying. With a decompressed spine, you too will comfortably adapt to a surprising array of positions and surfaces.

Posture Tip:
Reading Without Pain

Posture Tips1As the weather gets cooler we head indoors for warmth and entertainment. I especially like to spend time reading in bed. If you experience pain or discomfort (especially in your neck) when you read in bed,  keep the following tips in mind:

1. Any time you are sitting or lying down can be an opportunity to decompress the vertebrae in your back. To keep the right shape in the spine, build a staircase of pillows to support your lower back, mid-back and neck.

2.Make sure to leave enough space at the base of your spine to maintain an anteverted (tipped forward) pelvis.

3. Don’t bend the neck unnaturally to try to get closer to your book. A straight, supported neck will prevent pinching and fatigue.

4. If you are having trouble getting the right angle on your book, keep a pillow on your chest or knees to prop the book up in a visible position. This allows you to keep your spine in its optimal shape and length, and has the benefit of letting the arms relax, instead of holding up the book.

As rain and cold take over the fall weather it can be harder to get yourself to exercise outdoors. To keep up your physical activity, Yoga is a great choice. Bay area readers can click here to find information on a free Posture-for-Yoga workshop this month. The class will feature techniques that allow you to do Yoga poses without encountering injury or frustration.
